Day 1. Cusco- SorayPampa- SalkantayPampa- Soyrococha 

  • Hiking distance: 4.5 miles/7.2 km (6-7 hours)
  • Campsite altitude: 4.400 meters above sea level
  • Considered: Moderate to difficult day
  • Weather: Cold and windy

We pick you up at 5:00 am from your hotels to drive from Cusco to the trailhead of our classic salkantay trek called soraypampa, located at 3900 m.a.s.l. (12,870 ft.). Once at soraypampa we have an outdoor breakfast observing in front of us the snowy mountains of Salkantay and Humantay in all its splendor with its 6240 m.a.s.l.

After breakfast we get ready to begin hiking uphill our classic salkantay trek for 2 hours on a slow a steady pace enjoying the surreal andean scenery  until reaching to the outstanding humantay lake composed of pretty teal green color, once on the humantay lake you will have full of time to have a sit, meditate and connect with the lake and glacier, also your tour guide will share interesting facts about the salkantay trekking route, mountains and lakes.

Then, we hike 45 minutes downhill until we reach salkantay creek, from where we will ascend for 1 hour towards our lunch spot with a spectacular view of salkantay snowy mountain in front of us; Once at our lunch place called salkantay trek pampa our porter and cook will make us wait a cooled fruit juice and also a delicious buffet lunch, we will digest for 30 minutes and then we hike 2 more hours uphill to our campsite which is located just right at foot of salkantay glacier, in my expertise as a guide into salkantay trek for more than 5 five years l can tell you that there is nothing better than observing a starry sky and the milky way over a glacier higher tan 6000 m.a.s.l. Upon arrival to our first campsite our staff of porters will have the tents and duffels already pitched for you, providing you also warm water in buckets so you may washed up, be comfortable and rest after a llitle difficult but rewarding day in the classic salkantay trek, then in the evening enjoy happy hour with hot chocolate, popcorn and dinner.

Day 2. Soyrococha- Salkantay Pass- Chaullay- Llucmabamba

  • Weather: Cold, windy and warm and humid in the second half

We come to your tents at 5:30 am with a hot coca tea to wake you up and enjoy the great morning view with the sunrise over the sakantay mountain, after 5 minutes we provide you with warm water in buckets so you may washed up and wake up in a better way, then we give bewteen 30 to 40 minutes to pack essentials and then have breakfast for another 30 minutes .

Following we start ascending on the classic salkantay trek for one hour to the salkantay mountain pass, which is the highest point of our 5 day salkantay trek 4650 m.a.s.l. (15,484 ft).  Once at salkantay mountain pass; we wil celebrate our target, giving thanks to Pachamama ( mother earth) and Apus (mountain gods) so, we will perform an andean ritual to show respect to those deities. Then we hike 40 minutes to an overlooking from where we will be astonished by the bluish green lagoon of salkantay and the vilcabamba mountain range behing it, here we have plenty to meditate or doing a yoga session.

Then we descend for 3 hours to our lunch spot observing along the way dramatical andean mountains composed of massive boulders of diverse colors caused by fungi, lichen and moss on them; in addition to be accompanied all time by the majestic Salkantay mountain and the Vilcabamba mountain range. Once at lunch spot our porter and chef will be waiting for us with cooled fruit juice and a yummy buffet lunch, we digest for 30 minutes to after continue hiking downhill on the salkantay trekking route for 3 hours to Chaullay hamlet; through this stretch we will observe how the flora and fauna start changing little by little due we are getting into the cloud forest or the beginning of the amazon forest, inside this stretch we will observe different types of epiphyte, parasite and symbiotic plants as well as orquids and begonias, in addition of pretty andean amazonian landscape. Upon our arrival to Chaullay hamlet a car is waiting for us to take us for one hour towards our second  campsite where we get by 17:00 pm more or less. After leaving our belongings in our tents, we get ready to board a car for 30 minutes to the most beautiful crystalline hot springs of Cusco called Cocalmayo where we will relax the muscles for about two hours after a challenging but fantastic hike on the salkantay trekking route,then we return to our camp to enjoy our happy hour and dinner.

Day 3 Lucmabamba-Coffe Experience-Llactapata-Yoga Session (only if you want)

We come to their tents at 5:00 a.m. With a warm coca tea to wake you up and enjoy the beautiful landscape of the cloud forest, after you have packed and be ready, we will visit a family that has a coffee plantation to make the coffee experience.This experience consists of harvesting the coffee berries, peeling them, drying them, roasting them, filtering them and finally taking a sip.

After this extraordinary experience and our breakfast we will ascend through an original stretch of inca trail for 4 hours towards Llactapata from where we will overlook Machu Picchu in the distance; what makes the overlooking of Machu Picchu from Llactapata spectacular is the spectacular set of mountains around the Inca citadel, the back side of the snowy mountain of Salkantay and the entire Aobamba valley in front of us; without doubt, one of the best views of the whole classic salkantay trek. After enjoying the view, we descend for 30 minutes to our campsite. Upon arrival our porter and cook will be waiting for us with a delicious buffet lunch, enjoy our meal watching in front of you the magnificent Machu Picchu, after digesting for 30 minutes we leave our belongings in the tents and rest and then get ready to do a yoga session in an exclusive viewpoint of the valley and the inca city of Machu Picchu (the yoga session will be carried out only if you wish, if you want to avoid it, you have free time to enjoy the view, meditate or take a shower) this third day we hike only 5 hours so we have enough time to enjoy Llactapata, which is considered the most beautiful camp of all (see for yourself). In the evening we enjoy our happy hour and our delicious dinner and an incredible starry sky.

Day 4 Llactapata- Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes

We come to your tents at 5:30 a.m. with a hot coca tea to wake you up and after 5 minutes we provide warm water to you wash  face and wake up better and enjoy an incredible sunrise over Machu Picchu that usually happens by 5:45 am, when it is winter solstice. After this incredible experience, we have breakfast and get ready to descend on the classic salkantay trek for 2 hours to the Aobamba river and from there we hike 40 more minutes on a flat surface  to our lunch spot. After lunch we will have 30 minutes to digest and then we hike for 3 hours next to the railway line with direction to the town of Aguas Calientes which is the closest town to Machu Picchu, in this final stretch of hike we will have the chance to observe the most beautiful birds of our entire itinerary due to the fantastic canopy of the amazonian forest and also we will see the the retaining walls of Machu Picchu and Machu Picchu itself above us, in many diferent angles while we hike. Day 5 Aguas Calientes- Machu Picchu- Cusco

In order to get well rested and have plenty of time to enjoy the views, pictures and lessons at Machu Picchu We suggest you to wake up by 5:00 am in the morning get ready, pack the essentials and take the bus  from Aguas Calientes town to Machu Picchu, this will a ride of 30 minutes untill reaching the inca citadel at 6:15 am more or less which will give you the chance to see the sunrise on this magnifecent location.

Your guide will give enough time to take pictures into the most beautiful spots of the Incan city, share lessons about this amazing Incan masterpiece and display you the most impressive details of Machu Picchu; then We take the bus back at more or less 12:00 pm down to Aguas Calientes to enjoy without rush our lunch. This lunch is optional and not included. At lunch, your guide will deliver out train tickets so if you opt to skip this, please arrange to get these train tickets before leaving him at Machu Picchu. Unless you requested for an upgraded train, We will book the Expedition class train departing Aguas Calientes at 3:20 p.m. or  4:22 p.m. This will be a 2 hour train to Ollantaytambo or Poroy (based on which train you get), where an Incas Path driver will meet you and drive you back to the city on our van, then we drop you off at the door of your hotel or the closest possible if the is not car access until your hotel.

Hotel: This classic salkantay trek 5 day 4 night includes one night in a three-star hotel in Aguas Calientes, the town at the foot of Machu Picchu. The hotel you book will be listed on your invoice, and upgrades are always available.

Briefing: The night before your trip, you will come to our office for your informative meeting. You will receive your duffle bag that will stay with your porters while you hike on the salkantay trekking route. This duffle bag should not exceed 7 kg / 14 pounds and should include your sleeping bag and air mattress.

Porters: We include a personal porter who is responsible for carrying your duffle bag and also our camping equipment and food to our basecamp. There is no additional cost for this. You will not have access to your duffle bag until you arrive at your camp in the afternoon.

Transportation: Incas Path will be providing all transportation for this classic salkantay trek. You will be picked up from your hotel at 5 am and brought to the trailhead. The train back from Aguas Calientes will be on the train called Expedition Class and will be included in your trip. You also have the option to upgrade to the Vistadome class train for $75 per person. Once you arrive at the train station, our van will take you back to your hotel in Cusco. Food: Our 5 day salkantay trek includes expert hiking chefs who will will cook delicious meals that many previous trekkers have loved. We honor all food restrictions, so be sure to add any that you have on your booking form and let us know . Food is typically all served as buffet.

Water: Starting from your first lunch until your last breakfast We will provide you boiled, filtered, and then cooled water before distributing. You must bring personal water bottles and or a camelback. We advice you to bring a bottle or camelback of 1.5 litters , as being well hydrated is the key to feeling great in the mountains.

Details: we profess that it is the attention to small details that separates us from other travel agencies. Each hiker receives a small sleeping pillow, a foam mattress to insulate, a backpack cover to protect their belongings while hiking, a extra blanket, a bladder to refill with hot water for the cold nights and a rain poncho. Satellite phones: our priority will always be the safety of our customers and our crew. While all our guides are prepared and trained to deal with most basic problems that occur in the mountains; Very rarely serious problems may occur that will require the assistance of a specialist doctor and that is when our satellite phones are very useful and necessary, also if you want to call a friend who is anywhere in the world, from the salkantay mountain pass on your 5 day salkantay trek or from the dead woman´s pass on the classic inca trail or in case you need to verify the puppy that you left at home with the grandmother. First Aid: Every guide has got training in first aid from a clinic and firemen. We elaborate mandatory training sessions every February on the salkantay trek, which every Incas Path tour guide must attend. Your tour leader is going to have always a first-aid kit for basic medical problems.

Not Included on the classic Salkantay Trek 

Rentals: Due we are hiking the 5 day salkantay trek ,each trekker needs a sleeping bag when camping. Inflatable air mattresses and trekking poles (with rubber tips). They are optional but encouraged for a better comfort. If you don’t want to bring any of the above, they are all available for rent:

Additional options

Huayna Picchu is the mountain that stands next to Machu Picchu. It is a 1 hour hike to the top. While this hike is on your own, your guide will show you the entry. Huayna Picchu is an additional entrance ticket that we must secure for you with advance. The ticket is $75 per person.

Machu Picchu Mountain is the other mountain that stands above the Machu Picchu site. as Huayna Picchu it offers also spectacular views, this extra hike takes 3 hours round trip. This is an additional entrance ticket that we must secure for you in advance. This ticket is $75 per person.

Vistadome Train 

Our 5 day salkantay trek includes the ExpeditionTrain class. This train is always booked at 3:20 or 4:22 pm. departing from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo or Poroy. There is also the vistadome train class, which is an upgraded train that offers slightly larger seats and windows, some entertainment and snack. Usually, the Vistadome train is booked for 4:43 p.m. and goes to Poroy, a train station 30 minutes close to Cusco. As this is an upgraded fee, we will still include your transportation back to your hotel. The ticket is $75 per person.

Extra day at Machu Picchu

You will have from 6 am to 12 pm to enjoy Machu Picchu (it is not possible to be all day in Machu Picchu due to the new protection regulations developed by the Peruvian state), arriving at the citadel around 6 a.m. and leaving no later than 12 p.m. to take your train at 3:20 or 4:22 pm. If you also want to have a guided tour again the next day in Machu Picchu, we can also organize it.

We could also upgrade your hotel if you like better something more luxurious. Please remind the service in Aguas Calientes is not as good as in Cusco. Where do we pick up the hikers for the 5 day Salkantay Trek ?

Pick up will be from your hotel at 5:00 a.m. Please provide clear contact information of your place of accommodation when approaching our office in Cusco.

Where to pay the remaining amount for the Classic Salkantay Trek?

Most hikers arrive in Cusco 2 or 3 days before the Salkantay hike for proper acclimatization. Once you are in Cusco it is imperative that you come to our office to review the last details of your excursion and also pay the remaining amount of your Salkantay Trekking route .

Reserve for the Classic Salkantay Trek?

We try to make the booking as easy as possible in Incas Path. We prepare a reservation form where you will complete and include all the details for the excursion, and then a deposit of $ 200 per person. Once we have all the deposits and details, we will reserve your permits. Once the Machu Picchu permits are in our hands, we will send you your invoice and confirmation that everything is 100% organized. All excursions once confirmed, are guaranteed.

Permissions for the Classic Salkantay Trek?

Only tour operators licensed by the goverment, such as Incas Path, can obtain the corresponding permits from the government. Once we have obtained your Machu Picchu permits, the name and start date cannot be changed under any circumstances. The only information that the government allows us to change are passport numbers.

Passport Number Update?

The government will only allow us to change passport numbers if we have a copy of the new passport and the old passport. If you no longer have your old passport, any identification document that you have in your hands will be accepted while the name is the same as in your passport.

Where to stay in Cusco?

You can stay in a hotel that you consider convenient, however you must have the account of the location of the hotel because the traffic within the city has become stressful in the last 5 years. Many roads are up to 100 years old; Especially near the main square the roads are only for pedestrians. We will notify you if it is not possible to pick you up by car from your hotel and coordinate another nearby pick-up point. For a list of recommended hotels, consult your Incas Path sales representative.

Can I stay in the sacred valley?

Not, as the driving route to get the trailhead of the classic salkantay trek does not go through the sacred valley of the incas.

Can I stay an additional night in Machu Picchu town or Aguas Calientes?

Of course, if you agree to take the same train from Aguas Calientes that is part of your original itinerary, which is usually at 3.20 or 4:22 pm, then there is no additional charge for the train to be booked one day. after. If you need us to insure your hotel or another visit to Machu Picchu, Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu Mountain this will have an additional cost. If you decide to spend another night in Aguas Calientes, be sure to inform the Incas Path office at least one month in advance, so that your train ticket is purchased for the correct day.

Can I book my hotel on my own in Aguas Calientes?

You can choose any hotel to stay in Aguas Calientes. It is a small and very safe town. If you decide to book your hotel, be sure to tell us where you plan to stay so we can take you there safely.

During the trip, how challenging is the Classic Salkantay Trek?

Remember that this classic Salkantay hike, it is challenging  because you will climb one very high mountain pass; if rains, the dirt soil path could be muddy ( don´t worry if you have good hiking boots) also on the last three days into the salkantay trek is humid and hot all the time, so it will be exhausting but it will be worth it when you arrive at Machu Picchu, and so you will take your so awaited posdcard pictures and will learn all the most interesting details about Machu Picchu

Will I need extra money on the 5 day Salkantay trek?

Of course, if you want to buy some type of drinks, snacks,  along the way or reminders in the citadel of Machu Picchu or go to the thermal baths in Aguas Calientes, take about 400 soles or if you do not want to take cash with you there are ATMs in Aguas Calientes  and You can also make almost any payment using your credit or debit card, «also remember that along the days of hiking into the salkantay trek just cash is accepted».

How many people will be in my group on the Classic Salkantay Trek?

We require a minimum of 2 people for our tour, and if you are traveling alone, we invite you to join our groups that start each day. We can have up to 8 hikers with a guide and if our groups are between 9 and 16 people, we have 2 accredited guides with a lot of experience in the classic salkantay trek. During the low season it is most likely that the groups are small and during the high season the groups are probably much larger.

Do you need hiking boots for the classic salkantay trek 5 day ?

We always recommend hiking boots, since if it rains a little the 5 day salkantay hike can become a bit muddy and slipery. Please make sure they have good soles.

Are trekking poles really necessary on the Classic Salkantay Trek?

For the classic salkantay trek 5 day we recommend the use of trekking poles for everyone, especially for those passengers with knee problems or older people. There are several sections during the tour where you will need to use the walking sticks, either climbing or descending the dirt soil path.

Along the classic salkantay hike there are 3 places that has toilet. Firstly at the hiking start, then at lunch spot and at basecamp. Please carry a roll of toilet paper in your daypack.

Can I use plastic botles during the  Classic Salkantay Trek?

Due to New goverment regulations for the salkantay trek it will be 100% BANNED to BRING PLASTIC WATER  BOTTLES. We kindly suggest you getting your aluminum plastic bottles to avoid any dissapointment at the check points along the salkantay trek and in the Machu Picchu citadel.

Aluminum water bottles can be bought in many different shops around the main square. 

If you are still at home and ready to fly to Peru for your Inca trail we recommend you bringing aluminum water bottles or camel bags.

Where do I store my luggage?

All luggage not necessary for the hike must remain in Cusco. All hotels are very helpful and are quite accustomed to storing luggage of their guests, or if you wish you can store it safely with our customer service team in our office storage

What should I expect from the weather on the Classic Salkantay Trek?

Please understand that this is a very difficult question to answer. Historically, from April to October it is the dry season, from November to March it is the rainy season, but in recent years our weather has been affected by climate change and today it is very difficult to predict. Remember that in the mountains the radiation and heat are very high during the day and the evenings and nights always cold. We always recommend a short sleeve shirt for the salkantay trek and Machu Picchu, long pants to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, rain jacket and a fleece jacket and for the night a down jacket.

What is the standard procedure when it comes to tip?

Tipping is part of the tradition of any trip to Machu Picchu and, although we pay good salaries to our entire team, We always appreciate any extra appreciation. Keep in mind that this is not mandatory and that you should never feel pressured for this reason.

In general, participants in a group show their appreciation as a group for their porters and chef and a personal appreciation towards their tour guide, which will be according to their degree of satisfaction with the service provided.

Is there a possibility to cancel my Classic Salkantay Trek?

There is no possibility to cancel the classic salkantay hike. Even in extreme weather conditions or even in case of a strike there will be no cancellation. The Peruvian government does not have any type of refund or change of date, because if there is any weather problem or strike that prevents us from entering the salkantay trek; We will do our best to provide you with an alternate hike or take you to Machu Picchu in some way. We will keep you very informed in case there is a strike or weather inconvenience in Peru, Cusco or Machu Picchu. In the event that a passenger decides to cancel their trip to Peru, they will lose the total amount deposited because the entrance tickets to Machu Picchu, train and bus tickets have already been purchased.
